Top 5 Easy Mini Projects for Biomedical Engineering Students
Finding a simple, exclusive and effortless mini project is a task which every engineer finds as an obligation during the course. Being a Biomedical evangelist, I have decided to share the popular and trouble-free mini projects on Biomedical Instrumentation. Many of you find circuit diagrams on web easily, the problem actually comes in implementing it, thereby making the output less reliable and tentative. Here are the Top 5 working mini project ideas for Biomedical Engineering students. Click on the images to see an enlarged view of the circuit diagram before downloading it.
#5 Low-cost Digital Thermometer
One of the most common and omnipresent biomedical device is a Thermometer. Measure temperatures up to 150°C with an accuracy of ±1°C. With the help of op-amp IC 741 and NPN transistor, form a sensor circuit. The voltage across the base-emitter junction of the transistor is proportional to its temperature. The temperature can be read on a multimeter. Assemble the circuit on a general-purpose PCB and enclose in a small plastic box.
#4 Biomedical Sleep Inducer
Tackle insomnia by fiddling with the basic electronic components and transforming them into a device. This mini project generates type of geo-magnetic-fields and it helps the brain surrounded by an ideal environment for a sound sleep.
#3 Muscular Bio-Stimulator
A device useful to relieve head ache, muscular pain and revive frozen muscles that impair movement. Though it provides muscles stimulation and invigoration, it’s mainly an aid in removing cellulitis. Design a circuit that stimulates nerves of that part of your body where surface electrodes are attached using an astable multivibrator, transformer and basic electronics. Its is effective, not passable enough though.
#2 Emotional Stress Indicator
There is rarely a week that passes without hearing or reading about stress and its deleterious effect on health. Now, design an Emotional Stress Indicator (ESI) kit that allows you access your emotional pain. If the stress is very high, it gives visual indication through LED display along with a warning beep. It is based on the principle that the resistance of the skin varies in accordance with your emotional states. Resistance varies inverse proportional to the stress. Although, the accuracy and reliability of the results are not acceptable for medical diagnosis, but for a student, implementing this circuit is not only easy but also fun after it is complete. You must read Mini Project Explained: Emotional Stress Indicator (ESI) Kit
#1 A Low-cost Smart Hearing Aid
This is the first project idea that will be finalized by your classmates. It basically a miniature stereo preamplifier-cum-headphone amplifier or simply a hearing aid. Its design constraints are kept simple and the circuit consumes less power too. Although its performance is not comparable to that of commercially available sophisticated hearing aids, still it can serve the purpose well for persons with a low degree of hearing impairment. There are 4 different types of circuit diagrams available on EFY site. Have a look and implement it as your mini project before your classmates occupy it.
Hat tip to EFY- Electronics For You Magazine for providing 100% tested and working circuit diagrams. Its one of my favorite technology-oriented magazine which I recommend to every biomedical or electronics engineer.
There is a plethora of decent biomedical mini projects which can be implemented these days. The projects mentioned above can be effectively improved and refurbished according to your ideas, I request all the biomedical peers to share their views and ambiguities in the comments section below.

what is the difference between d thermometer u published here and d normal one which is found in hospitals??? is there any special feature in the thermometer which iu published in this website???
